Hi,
My name is Hannah Rodriguez, and I am a student at Cal State Northridge. Also, I am the chairperson of fundraising for the Deaf Studies Association on campus. In March, we have set up what we call “Silent Weekendâ€. We boat everyone and anyone, of any ASL skill level, Hard-of Hearing, and Deaf, over to Catalina Islands, and submerge ourselves in the Deaf Culture. We stay the weekend, and ASL is the only way to communicate. Activities, hikes, lectures, and ice-breakers are among the things we do to as we try to improve our skills, and become more comfortable and aware in the Deaf-World.
The problem is, the cost of the trip and the boat has put us in major debt. We are struggling to raise the money needed, and though we can still have the event this year, in the future, we probably won’t be able to do the same. It is very important to all of us to keep this going and to continue broadening people’s minds and their experiences in this way.
Would CAD be able to help us raise the money we need, or would you know of any other organizations willing to help us?? We would greatly appreciate it!!
thank you
Hi, would you be interested to put CAD & CADvrs on our festival program book? We are hosting 12th World Deaf Magicians Festival in this April 2008. Please contact me as soon as possible.
I just checked this website and found that we do not have our chapter logos on this website. I am not sure if these pictures are copyright. I would prefer having our chapter logos. It would be nice to have each chapter having their own designs. This website looks pretty dull.
I understand that we had the flyer about fund-raising luncheon in Riverside on March 2, 2008 already posted in before it changed to new website. I would appreciate if you get that flyer back on.
I do not know if I’m leaving a message on the correct site, but I am searching for help with my Mom. She was a hearing person until September 2006. She had been deaf in her left ear but that September she became deaf in her right ear also. She will be 88 in May 2008. Since I take care of all her business, medical and financial, I find people, doctors especially, who are unwilling to write to her on her dry erase board (or deal with her deafness.) This is the only way we communicate that is half way successful. If you can advise me of any programs that address this late age deafness, it will be appreciated. In addition, she does not accept the fact that her hearing is gone. Thank you for your time.
My name is Rana Trad. I am 24 years old, and I live in Lebanon. I majored in Early Childhood as a BA, and in special education as an MA.
For 4 years, I’ve been working in a school for special students that deals with deaf. I teach English, and sciences for KGs, grades 3, 4, and 5.
I am interested to assist in a professional session, or to pursue a training.
I was wondering if any session or training is available starting summer 2008.
LuLu,
I would suggest you check the California Telephone Access Program (CTAP) located in Oakland. This website is new and we are still learning how to modify things like adding link to CTAP. For now, you should check your local Deaf service agency such as DCARA in San Leandro, GLAD in Los Angeles, DCS in San Diego, DHHSC in Fresno, NorCal in Sacramento, etc. and ask them for the contact information for CTAP. You can also check with those agencies for assistance for your particular situation.
Melvin Patterson,
I apologize that the Board is still in the learning curve about using this website and dealing with comments so we missed the February 2nd event. However, you can try contacting David Prince, president of the LA chapter at cadlaprez@yahoo.com, or post in the LA chapter link on the left side of this screen.
The CAD board appreciates your input on the new website design. Your chapter logos are not included on this new website because our webmaster could not put them in in time for the Palm Springs meeting. It is not known if they could be transferred or if we need to submit those designs a different way. Rest assured that the current logos do not violate copyright laws. Also, it takes time to get everything set up the way we want them to especially with many of us needing training on how to post things on this site other than on blogs.
Please feel free to make announcements of your local activities under CAD Chapters on the Home page by clicking your city. Your local Chapter President can help post announcements for you!
Bear with us, while we continue to work on improving this site.
Hello Hannah:
A Silent Weekend on the Catalina Islands sounds like great fun! Unfortunately, it costs to travel! Perhaps your Deaf Studies Association and the local LA /Orange County CAD Chapters can work with you on some fundraising ideas? Do you charge the participants a fee and if so, how many people do you need to break even? Why don’t you contact the local CAD Chapter Officers for assistance? Since March is just a few weeks away, I am not sure what can be accomplished within this short time frame, but it won’t hurt to try. I wish you the best and thanks for asking CAD. If not for this March, perhaps next time?
What a great idea, Yeah! You may ask the Orange County Chapter as well. Los Angeles would love to. Why don’t we both work with you and you can set two ports location, One at the Newport Beach and one at the Long Beach/San Pedro. So that both Chapter will take care of the ticketings.
The Best time for the trip to Catalina Island on the Spring time or near Summer time. March seems too cold to ride on a boat across the Ocean and the winds outside, COLD! I have experienced once. best times are Spring time, Summer and early Fall.
Please contact me. my email is in the website.
Will you please share this to Deaf in California to let everyone know that West Virginia is host the 58th Annual Men and 41st Annual Women Dixie Deaf Bowling Association on May 22 through 25, 2008 at Charleston, WV.

I am writing to follow up on a call I received from a member of CAD on March 12 regarding organizing a fundraiser for CAD in association with the Los Angeles Avengers, the Arena Football team at STAPLES Center.
We have a very exciting opportunity that just opened up for our Saturday, April 12 game against the Utah Blaze. We have an hour of field time which we would like to open up to your organization to play on before from 2-3 PM. It’s an easy way to raise money and a lot of fun for the members of your organization. Please feel free to contact me for more details at estefanac@laavengers.com or 310.407.0286. You can visit our groups page for more information on our fundraisers at http://www.laavengers.com/groups. I look forward to speaking with someone soon and organizing a successful event for your organization!

My name is Stephanie Logan and I am a deaf doctoral candidate at the University of Missouri in Counseling Psychology.
I am conducting a study on the coping strategies of deaf and hard of hearing women who have had any unwanted sexual experiences (anytime in their lifetime). This study is important because very little research has been conducted in this area for deaf and hard of hearing women.
Participation will require completing a brief (approximately 20 minutes) anonymous online questionnaire.
Participation in this study is completely voluntary. Participation in this study is confidential.
This research has been fully approved through the Institutional Review Board (IRB) at the University of Missouri.
If you are a deaf or hard of hearing woman who has experienced an unwanted sexual experience in your lifetime and you agree to participate, please follow the web link at the bottom. Otherwise, use the X at the upper right corner to close this window and disconnect.
If you would like further information about this research project, please feel free to respond to this letter via phone or e-mail.

Hi I dont know if I am doing this right but i am doing a research paper on the California Association of the Deaf and I was wondering how i get more info on the company itself.
Hi, my name is Sagar Deo. I am the Director of Restaurant Experience for a new restaurant called uWink.
We have recently begun getting quite a few Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing customers telling us that our restaurant environment is
quite Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing friendly. The reason for that is our restaurant features touch screen terminals at every table (and at the bar) where customers can order food, drinks and play games. This, we believe, is creating an empowering restaurant experience for the Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing community.
So if you get the chance to visit, we would love to get your critical feedback on what we can do to improve the experience for Deaf/Hard-of-Hearing customers.
Oh and on an interesting side note, uWink was created by Nolan Bushnell, the founder of Chuck E. Cheese, Atari, and Pong!

I am contacting you regarding a federal piece of legislation we are working on in Washington on behalf of the American Academy of Audiology; the National Associaion of the Deaf; the Hearing Loss Association of American; the American Tinnitus Association; the American Deaf Blind Association; the American Association of People with Disabilities and the National Rural Health Care Association. This legislation–the Medicare Hearing Health Care Enhancement Act HR 1665–introduced by Mike Ross is seeking more cosponsors in order to get considered. This legislation would provide direct access to audiological services under Medicare and already has 93 cosponsors.
I am writing to enlist your assistance in helping us get more of the California Delegation to cosponsor the bill. More specifically, we are really trying to have Congresswoman Lois Capps cosponsor the legislation. Congresswoman Capps has been lobbied heavily by many of the national physician organizations to not cosponsor the legislation. They have been successful in not having her cosponsor legislation which she has supported in the past.
We need your help.
If someone could contact me at the above email or on my phone at 202-347-0035.

Would it be possible for Deaf Bilingual Coalition to make a formal request to AGB and ICED for an apology announcement of serious oppression on Deaf people since 1880 Milan Conference?
Like recently that Prime Minister of Canada, Stephen Harper, sincerely apologized to Canadian Natives for language, social, and sexual abuses in the residences.
I was researching information on how I can empower my deaf student and I came across you website. I would like for us to partner as we have a common goal for the deaf.
Currently we are a non-profit private school for students aged three through to eighteen.
I would love to forge a link between our entities to share information, ideas and programs. In Jamaica there are not much opportunities for the deaf, but I would like to change that and I am working to do just that.
Please contact me with information so we can begin the link.
Can you send me some historical information about Alice T. Terry? I plan to present a workshop on American Deaf Leaders from 1800 to 1925 during the NAD Conference in New Orleans on July 9th.
I noticed from a reliable source that Alice T. Terry was the first woman president of the CAD. In what years? Also, she wrote many excellent articles for The Silent Worker (formerly The Deaf American and now NADMag). If you have it, it would be great. Please let me know.

Hi, hope you can help. I’m 48 and laten deaf, I’ve taken our local community college ASL courses and still truly know nothing useful to help with communicating other then pen/paper. Sadly, there is no chapter here in the Ridgecrest, CA area or even close.
Do you know of any programs, emersion programs or the like that could help me. Or possibly a few kind souls that could tutor me.
Via VP phone or something. I’ve talked with our city and county officals and they tell me there is nothing here to help me.
I’ve accepted the fact I’m deaf now I just want to be able to communicate with others again.
LOUIS HAS MOVED BACK FROM OHIO BECAUSE HE LOST HIS JOB AS A CAD DRAFTER AT DELPHI, WHICH WENT BANKRUPT. HE IS LOOKING FOR A SIMILAR JOB IN ORANGE COUNTY OR THEREABOUTS. I recently saw a deaf dancer named Antoine Hunter perform in Creative Access’ DEAF ARTS & CULTURE - PAH! festival (Philadelphia) and in the DC Area Black Deaf Advocates’ NIGHT OF THE STARS event. He is absolutely amazing! I think he would be a great addition to your performance line-up.
He has danced with a number of reknown dance troupes, including Robert Moses’ Kin and Savage Dance Company and has even choreographed for an Expedia commercial. He is founder of the Urban Jazz Dance Company, co-founder of Tri-Angel Urban Ballet, and has recently started a project to start a deaf dance troupe.

Thanks again
John

I live in the North Hollywood area and work in Santa Monica. I am uncertain how or where to get involved. Please let me know if I can become part of the community.
Thank you,

Respectfully
Diana S.

His website is http://www.antoinehunter.com.
He is from the Bay Area.

Hello David,
I noticed that you have a program for the Jr. High and High School level. Do you have programs that assist with hearing aids for younger children. I have a 3 year old that has just been diagnosed with hearing loss and our insurance does not cover the cost for hearing aids and I found your website on another website and hopefully I can find some assistance. Please let me know.
Thanks.
