AB 2072 - LESSON 101
Vote NO on AB2072!
This feature will help all understand what this bill would do…that it would require parents of a newborn baby diagnosed with a hearing loss receive written information on all “communication options” for their child by an audiologist or other professional at a follow-up appointment after diagnosis. This bill would also require written information on options when a child enters the Early Start Program and when a child is referred to the program by a state agency. This bill alleges that this information will not cost the state anything, nor shall the state be involved in the implementation disseminating “free” brochures. Providing information to parents on language acquisition for their baby is a vital concern to us all. Making sure one constituent group does NOT manipulate information is even more important.
This AB2072 bill is flawed for the following reasons:
- No accountability, oversight and transparency on the part the State of California to ensure parents make informed choices.
- It is not clear who will develop and fund the written handouts and electronic information.
- Audiologists are not qualified to educate parents about language development. They diagnose hearing loss.
- American Sign Language (ASL) gets the short shrift in the proposed materials. American Sign Language is a human right for all Deaf People and should be available for all babies, Deaf and hearing.
Our vision is a world without barriers for every deaf baby or child and their parents. We are to empower parents to achieve their true potential to achieve best outcomes for their deaf babies and children with approaches to the development of effective communication within the family and other environments. Please take the time to view this so you can understand why it is very important to VOTE NO on AB2072, too! Thank you!
