Q= Question, A= Answer
IMAGE DESCRIPTION; Two pictures of prisons, one from outside looking at several buildings and one from inside looking up at three floors with several rows of individual cells with bars and railings.
Q: I am wondering about the numbers of COVID-19 cases within prisons, have those numbers gone up or down?
A: Governor Newsom: The numbers have gone down from 4,051 to 3,076 which is almost 1,000 less. We are using every room including chapels and gyms to isolate inmates as much as possible in both San Quentin and Vacaville, which I have visited myself to make sure that the transmission of the virus is controlled as much as possible.

Q: I am curious about the communication coming from the White House from the President and Vice-President about opening schools again. The US government is telling states to open schools in order to get federal funding. What are your plans?
A: Governor Newsom: Yes I have seen the communications from the US government and I am not very happy about it. We will only open schools (K-12, preschools, colleges) if it is safe to do so. No room for discussion on that. If it is safe then we will open, if not then we have to plan accordingly. We have 1,000 school districts in California that cannot follow the state guidelines, they cannot have distancing in their existing buildings. They can’t. So of course they can’t open. Plus we have to make sure students and staff have masks, face shields, stay 6 feet apart, protections, gloves, intensive cleaning on a daily basis. We have to protect students and staff, there is a lot to consider. The Superintendent of Public Education and I are in communication and we are discussing this very issue. If schools can follow all of the state guidelines and have everything that they need then I support those schools opening, if not then I don’t support it. Maybe some schools will have to delay their start date. I do not support schools opening until we know for sure they are safe.
Governor Newsom: I want to remind you that it is easy to be overwhelmed with the many “what ifs” and the best thing you can do is keep at the forefront of your mind your personal responsibility to wear a mask. If you must go out, keep your distance. Avoid crowds. Wash your hands. I am saying this again and again because I want you to be safe. Please take care. Thank you.
