DEAF INTERPRETER: Hello, my name is Michael Boucher, Deaf Interpreter, and today’s interpretation will include the information given from Dr. Ghaly, during the press conference given on October 6, 2020. Dr. Ghaly is the Secretary of California Health and Human Services.
DR. GHALY: Starting today with a COVID-19 update. As you know we have been watching how this virus spreads from one person to another. We do this by giving out nose swab and mouth swab tests.
DR. GHALY: We use these swabs to find out who has the virus and who does not. We noticed that the number of people who have the virus has gone down! That is great. But don’t get too excited! We still need to be very careful. We still see some senior citizens not feeling well, feel tired, forgetting what they were doing or where they need to do, we do have a place for you to get more support for what you need. These places are specifically for senior citizens where you are welcome to go and they are ready to support you. We are worried about our senior citizens because many can easily get COVID-19 and if they do, they could possible die. The number of senior citizens with COVID-19 has gone down but we need those numbers to go down even more. We can do this by making sure that younger people are tested regularly If you test often, we can identify if you have the virus and can isolate you right away. We will ask you to go home, stay in a room alone, rest, and recover until you are well. California is a large state, with lots of different communities. We now focus on four specific groups: low-income, Latino/a/x, Black/African Heritage, and Asian Pacific Islanders. We need to make sure they have access to information about COVID-19 so that they will have lower numbers of people who have the virus. We want to make sure they can get tested and get the services they need to be healthy. We want to make sure that how we take care of them is the same as how we take care of people who are white. We need to know how to help, give them the services and education that they need to stay healthy. We are looking for money to serve these different populations including education and testing.
DR. GHALY: Remember the color coding system for our counties: purple, red, orange yellow. We have this system for all counties in California based on the number of COVID-19 cases and how much it has spread. I know you want to go out to businesses, want schools to open, want to play sports, but remember if you have a high number of COVID-19 cases and your county is purple means you can’t do those things. If the number is smaller and your county color is not purple trying to get better and be closer to yellow then more places, schools, and areas to play will open up. We had a large number of counties that were purple but now we are seeing more counties move out of being purple. The important thing is not to move to orange then back up to purple. We don’t want that. Remind you please wear your masks, you are doing a great job!
DR. GHALY: But, I am seeing people in the store and outside wearing masks the wrong way. Please make sure it covers your nose and your mouth, not just your mouth.
DR. GHALY: If you only cover your mouth not your nose then the air coming out of my nose can spread the virus to others. The air coming in my nose can give me the virus. The best way to stop the spread is to cover both your nose and your mouth.
DR. GHALY: Remind you please keep wearing yoru mask, keep your distance, wash your hands (beofre and after you eat), if you go out when you get back home, wash your hands too, don’t socialize with large groups stay with only those that live in the same house as you.
DR. GHALY: Remember, every year during winter people often don’t feel good and may catch the flu. Please go to a place that offers flu shots, go get your shot. This is your best protection from getting the flu. Thank you!
