DEAF INTERPRETER: Hello my name is Alexis interpreting for Governor Newsom’s press conference today.
GOVERNOR NEWSOM: Hello, I remember my grandfather took very good care of our earth. He had a deep love and respect for plants, trees, animals, and the earth. He passed down those values to me.

GOVERNOR NEWSOM: As governor, I want to do everything I can to honor my grandfather’s legacy and save our earth and the earth’s resources including plants, animals, water, energy and more.
We are seeing so many things happen to our earth. During the wildfires, animals are losing their habitat or homes. When there is a fire, when trees fall, animals have to leave and when they return there is nothing left. People have time to pack their things, leave in their cars, and in the same way, they often return to find their homes gone because of the fire.
GOVERNOR NEWSOM: With the heat and not enough rain, our waters, lakes, rivers, are drying up.
I have called in a team of people who know a lot about plants, animals, water, energy, to work with me, work together to do what we can to save our earth so that we can all live on a planet with clean homes, clean air, and a clean earth. We come up with ideas that lead to bills that you can vote on. I hope that you will vote YES on these bills that try to fight against global warming and climate change. Think about the fruits and vegetables that we eat everyday. Have you thought about where those come from? During COVID-19, shelter in place, you all stayed home, many of you were able to continue to work from home.
GOVERNOR NEWSOM: But one group of people didn’t have this option, that is our farmworkers who are busy every day going out in the farms to gather fruit and vegetables. What if they didn’t go out and pick fruits and vegetables during this time? We would not have food out on tables. Even during a worldwide pandemic, even during fires and smoky air, our farm workers have worked hard to make sure that we have fresh food on our tables. Plus California sends our produce to places all over the world! When you go to the grocery store and see fruit and vegetables and put them in your cart, bag them up and bring them home, remember to thank our farm workers for their hard work. I am so thankful for their care of our earth.
GOVERNOR NEWSOM: I am repeating myself here but once again want to remind you to be serious about wearing masks, washing your hands, staying 6 feet apart and not going out in big groups. I know that you want to go to school, not learn by yourself alone at home. Some of you want to go to work and be with your co-workers. We can do that if we get our numbers down. If we all do our part we can open schools, businesses, hair salons, clothing stores, and more. Please be careful, follow the rules, and we will stop this virus from spreading. Thank you.
