Humberto Guzman

President

Humberto Guzman is a visionary leader, community advocate, and lifelong learner dedicated to bridging communities through technology, education, and human connection. With over 16 years of service at the California School for the Deaf, Riverside, Humberto has committed his career to advancing tools and systems that make everyday life more accessible and empowering for Deaf individuals. A proud history enthusiast and tech innovator, Humberto brings together his deep appreciation for the past with a forward-thinking approach to the future. His passion lies in improving the quality of life for Deaf Californians through thoughtful, inclusive technology and in fostering meaningful collaborations between Deaf and hearing communities. Known for his hands-on leadership style, Humberto thrives in purpose-driven work that connects people across differences. Whether developing strategic plans, mentoring emerging leaders, or supporting grassroots efforts, he leads with integrity, warmth, and a commitment to equity.

As President of the California Association of the Deaf, Humberto steers the organization with a focus on advocacy, transparency, and action. His work is rooted in a belief that true progress happens when all voices, regardless of background, are heard, valued, and uplifted. In every role he holds, Humberto continues to champion the values of linguistic access, human rights, and community empowerment for all Deaf Californians.

Mike Anderson

Vice President

Mike Anderson is a respected leader, lifelong educator, and proud advocate whose 31-year career at the California School for the Deaf, Riverside (CSDR) has left a lasting legacy. Now retired, Mike continues to dedicate his time and energy to uplifting the Riverside Deaf community through civic engagement, cultural celebration, and accessibility advocacy.

Mike’s commitment to public service includes his impactful tenure on the City of Riverside’s Commission of the Deaf, where he navigated municipal codes, the Brown Act, and the Sunshine Ordinance to ensure Deaf representation in city governance. His advocacy has helped shape inclusive city policies and build meaningful partnerships between civic leaders and the Deaf community. Over the years, Mike has played an active role in organizing events like Deaf Awareness Month and DeaFestival, amplifying visibility and pride for the Deaf community across Southern California.

Today, as Vice President of the California Association of the Deaf, Mike brings wisdom, humility, and a collaborative spirit to the board. His lifelong dedication to community-building continues to inspire the next generation of leaders. In his free time, Mike enjoys creating on TikTok, traveling to new places, and spending quality time with his family.

Ryan Fingerle

Ryan Fingerle is a passionate advocate, educator, and creative leader committed to uplifting the Deaf community across California. As an English Professor, she brings over a decade of teaching and tutoring experience to both Deaf and hearing learners through championing bilingual literacy in ASL and English with empathy and clarity. Holding an M.A. in English and Creative Writing, Ryan blends academic rigor with creative expression, encouraging her students to find their voice and confidence through writing. A published poet and writer, she views language as a bridge that one that connects cultures, amplifies lived experience, and drives meaningful change.

Ryan’s upbringing and professional journey through both Deaf and hearing spaces have shaped her deep commitment to equity, access, and collaboration. She regularly advocates for inclusive practices across campus and community life, using her platform to build understanding between communities. Her dedication extends beyond the classroom. Ryan has long been involved with the Deaf Community of Riverside and is a key member of the DeaFestival planning committee. Her service is grounded in a love for community, language, and collective growth.

As Administrative Secretary of the California Association of the Deaf, Ryan brings a thoughtful balance of organization, vision, and heart ensuring clear communication, strong documentation, and compassionate leadership within the board and beyond.

Diane Gamache

Correspondence Secretary

Diane Gamache is an accomplished ASL instructor and student-focused educator who believes in creating inclusive, empowering learning environments. With a deep commitment to community and collaboration, Diane has spent her career mentoring students, supporting families, and building systems that help others thrive, both inside and outside the classroom.

As a dedicated leader, Diane brings a calm, solutions-oriented mindset to every space she enters. Whether she’s designing innovative lesson plans or contributing to nonprofit leadership initiatives, her focus remains the same: to foster environments where growth, communication, and compassion flourish.

In her role as Corresponding Secretary for the California Association of the Deaf, Diane helps ensure transparency, strong communication, and smooth coordination across the board that is always guided by a commitment to accessibility, equity, and service.

Outside of her professional work, Diane is passionate about wellness, personal development, and lifelong learning. She enjoys staying active through fitness and mindful movement, exploring new ideas, and creating tools and routines that make everyday life more intentional and joyful. Above all, she values quality time with her family and believes that small, consistent actions can lead to powerful and lasting change.

Hugh Lafler

Treasurer

Hugh Lafler brings over 28 years of dedicated service to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community through his long-standing work at NorCal Services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing. As the director overseeing three vocational training programs, Hugh has empowered countless individuals to gain meaningful employment and develop skills for lifelong independence. His leadership is rooted in compassion, accountability, and a deep understanding of community needs.

As Treasurer of the California Association of the Deaf, Hugh combines his extensive nonprofit experience with a sharp eye for detail, ensuring transparent financial stewardship and responsible budgeting that reflect CAD’s mission and values. He is especially passionate about supporting the Deaf Plus community and making sure all voices are represented in statewide advocacy efforts. Outside of his professional life, Hugh enjoys diving into numerology, keeping up with political developments, and unwinding with YouTube videos or suburban hikes. He treasures quality time with his girlfriend and believes in living a balanced life rooted in curiosity, service, and joy.

Shari Kido

Membership Director

Shari Kido is a seasoned Deaf educator and dedicated advocate who brings over three decades of service, cultural insight, and heart to the California Association of the Deaf (CAD). A biracial Asian American woman of Japanese and Caucasian heritage, Shari draws strength from her diverse background to foster inclusivity and cultural pride within the Deaf community.

Since 1990, Shari has worked with Deaf and Hard of Hearing students across multiple Deaf schools, guiding generations through education, language access, and cultural affirmation. She is passionate about preserving and passing down Deaf culture, values, and traditions to future generations, a commitment reflected in her leadership and teaching.

As CAD’s Membership Director, Shari is devoted to strengthening community connections, ensuring member voices are heard, and growing a more engaged and representative organization. Her love for travel fuels her curiosity about people, stories, and global perspectives, making her a bridge-builder across communities and cultures. Whether in the classroom, at community events, or connecting with members across the state, Shari leads with empathy, purpose, and a steadfast belief in the power of collective belonging.
