FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Douglas Tilden 5K Walk/Run and 10K Run – JUNE 2, 2013
The Douglas Tilden 5K/10K Walk/Run, back by popular demand, will be held at Pioneer East Meadows Picnic Area in Golden Gate Park in San Francisco on June 2, 2013! This event is a collaborative fundraiser by five organizations [Alliance for Deaf Bilingual Children (DBC); DCARA (Deaf Counseling, Advocacy and Referral Agency (DCARA), Deafhood Foundation (DHF), California Association of the Deaf (CAD) and San Francisco Club of the Deaf (SFCD)] to reflect the vibrant San Francisco Bay Area Deaf and signing community and to promote walk/run for Deaf Humanity everywhere. The 5K/10K Walk/Run will bring the Deaf community together for fun and to support these organizations’ missions through participation in the event.
DBC campaigns for the cultural and linguistic rights of all Deaf babies and children to learn American Sign Language and English through three areas: education, grassroots organizing, and direct action. DCARA provides Deaf, Hard-of-Hearing, Late-Deafened, and Deaf-Blind communities with the resources, access and advocacy services they need to make independent decisions in a variety of situations. CAD preserves, protects and promotes the civil, human, and linguistic rights of Deaf people in California. DHF is dedicated to achieving economic and social justice for all Deaf people. SFCD promotes social and general betterment of its Deaf members and hosts recreational activities. All five organizations involved will continue to promote their organization’s mission throughout the year to educate and enrich the lives of all those in the Deaf community and future generations to come with the funds earned from this event. As new laws are being enacted at all levels of governments, new challenges are being faced in areas such as social, education, economic and cultural heritage. It has become more important to protect the progress that has been made in these areas, for future generations. There are approximately 300,000 Deaf and Hard of Hearing people of all ages living in the Bay Area.
