Hello, my name is Marla Hatrak. I am co-chair of CAD’s Advocacy & Policy Committee. Today, I will give an update on our activities from 2018.
First in January 2018, we had a Board retreat. When we gathered, I submitted my committee budget request and list of anticipated activities.
In February, 2018, Callie Frye who work with Disability Rights Advocates invited me to be on a panel and speak about Deaf people’s needs.
In March 2018, I attended Early Hearing Detection & Intervention (EHDI) Conference in Denver, Colorado. I did not present a workshop, but we gathered with other Deaf stakeholders from all over the country. It was a nice, unifying, collaborative kind of discussion.
September, 2018, you may remember we did a Language Policy report. If you are not aware, you can look on our CAD website. Scroll for Language Policy report. Since it has been published, for the next year, we are set on providing workshops to organizations and agencies throughout the state. We did two of them in September. First one was at Deaf & Hard of Hearing Services Center (DHHSC), Fresno. The second was at DCARA, San Leandro. I gave workshops at both places on Language Policy report.
November 2018, we had our first symposium for EHDI stakeholders. It was very successful. The word, SYMPOSIUM, means that we discuss one topic—not different topics, but one topic. That was what happened that day. Our discussions were mostly focused on deaf children ages 0-5, language deprivation, and what should now happen.
December 2018, South California, no, I mean, San Diego Chapter RID invited me to speak about our Language Policy report.
It had indeed been a busy year, but it had also been a lot of fun.
On May 11, 2019, there will be a statewide CAD meeting at GLAD in Los Angeles. I will be there. If you want to discuss or ask questions, I will be there. But, I’ll also be happy to answer if you email me or contact our President, Kavita.
Thank you for watching.
